Congratulations, Rebecca!

Our newest studio composer is the proud 1st Place 8 and Under recipient of the SRMTA’s Provincial Student Composer Competition. Rebecca used her imagination, knowledge of broken triads, pedal, and sharps and flats to create The Haunted Graveyard Waltz. She will receive a $50 scholarship and the prestige of being named the best young composer in Saskatchewan.

.

Her piece will go on to the national CFMTA Student Composer Competition to compete with all other 8 and Under provincial winners. Good luck, Rebecca!

The SSO presented PLAYATHON, a musical marathon, on Sunday, June 3rd, 2012 from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Instead of running on pavement, musicians ran their fingers over the keys to create beautiful music. Thanks to students Madeleine, Courtney, Monica, Lois, Lindey, Olivia, and Laurissa, and teachers Noreen and Karen for contributing to 12 hours of continuous music. Congratulations to Madeleine and Courtney for coming in “first” and raising $235 in support of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra!

.
Held at the new Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra Office at 408 20th Street West, PLAYATHON was a celebration of the arrival of a newly donated 9 foot Heintzman concert grand which came from the estate of Earl Ewing, a former piano tuner.  Restoration of the piano was donated to the Symphony by Roger Jolly of the Yamaha Centre. A beautiful instrument to run a marathon on!
