Halloween Recital

21 November;  Author: admin

Many thanks to the Tosh family for once again hosting our 4th annual Halloween concert and costume party on Saturday, October 29th in their fabulous home!

Thank you as well to the students who appeared in costume and performed so well. With approximately 40 students in attendance, we were treated to a varied array of musical performances including pieces on a Halloween theme and other mysterious, imaginative works.

Following the concert, everyone enjoyed a spooktacular assortment of Halloween goodies, which is something students always love!

Jan Lisiecki in Concert

Those who attended Jan Lisiecki’s encore concert on Sunday, October 23rd at Third Ave Church were once again “wow’d” by the 16 year old teen sensation from Calgary who played a wide stylistic array of piano pieces. We heard selections from history’s most well-known composers  -  J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Mendelssohn – along with lesser-known but equally enjoyed contemporary pieces by Martinu and Mozetich (a Canadian composer).

This fall, Jan Lisiecki opened the Paris Symphony season, performed all across Europe, flew to Saskatoon en route to a concert tour of Japan, then off to the Barbican in London. Past performances have included playing Carnegie Hall, performing with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Pinchas Zukerman, and he has performed with orchestras throughout Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Scotland, as well as for the Queen in England.  In addition to this, he is a student (on full scholarship) at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto.

This young man is one to watch in the future,

especially after having just signed a 5 CD deal with Deutsche Grammophon, the world’s finest classical recording label. Among these very prestigious labels, he was also named the first patron of the Third Avenue Centre for Community Enrichment here in Saskatoon.

Despite all of his awards and prizes, he remains a very gracious and modest young man, transported around the globe with his mother at his side.

Many thanks to the senior students who ushered at the concert, and thanks to the students and parents who stayed afterward to meet Jan Lisiecki and have autographs and CDs signed.  It was a memorable night that will not soon be forgotten!

We all look forward to hearing him play again in the future!

Another “Congratulations!” goes to students Lois and Lindey for being Kiwanis Club of Saskatoon bursary winners. This bursary money will be used towards pursuing further musical education and reaching their ambitious goals for this year!

The Kiwanis Club of Saskatoon hosted a beautiful luncheon on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at which we heard a varied musical program from all award winners, located in one of the ballrooms at the Delta Bessborough.

Both of these lovely, young ladies have participated in the Saskatoon Music Festival, RCM exams, and many recitals. They are well deserving recipients of this fine award!
